OSPITI dei nostri musei civici saranno, di tanto in tanto, alcuni capolavori, o anche dipinti e sculture che possono suscitare curiosità e interesse per la singolarità della loro storia, o di ciò che raffigurano, o per la loro rarità, o per la ricerca d'una loro corretta attribuzione, o insomma per uno qualsiasi dei mille motivi che formano l'attrattiva d'un'opera d'arte. Come ogni collezione, il museo dovrebbe in primo luogo tendere ad accrescere le proprie raccolte, tenendo un occhio attento sul multiforme e mutevole mondo del mercato, cercando di colmare le proprie lacune, andando in caccia degli oggetti che convengono ai suoi fini: che in parte convergono con quelli del privato collezionismo e in parte no, perché non vi trovano spazio fenomeni mercantili, e perché scopo del museo è, principalmente, quello di appartenere a chiunque, e a chiunque esporre le bellezze che conserva, che eredita, che acquista.
Ma appunto perché il museo è un luogo pubblico, a tutti aperto, di contemplazione e di apprendimento, esso è anche la sede più adatta, quasi casa comune, per offrire ospitalità a cose che non gli appartengono, che non sono di sua proprietà: ma la cui proprietà culturale resta comunque di tutti, se tutti possono goderne, anche solo ogni tanto.
Perciò abbiamo chiesto, e continueremo a chiedere, che le stanze delle raccolte private, o le botteghe dei mercanti d'arte più esperti ed informati, si aprano per noi, e per voi, ogni tanto; e magari con una certa continuità. Le stanze offriranno, così, un'attrattiva in più; e si vedranno, forse, cose rare e non consuete. Chesaranno illustrate, di volta in volta, in questi libricini da chi meglio le conosce. Che illustreremo, di volta in volta, con la nostra voce a chi vorrà accompagnarci nelle stanze del nostro museo. Anzi, no: del vostro museo.

From time to time, our city museums will host certain masterpieces or even paintings and sculptures which are objects of curiosity or interest because of their unusual backgrounds, for what they represent, for their rarity and/or to research on their correct identification; in short, for any of the thousand and one reasons which make a work of art what it is. As with any collection, a museum should firstly strive to augment its own collection, keeping a close watch on the diverse and changing art market with a view to filling gaps and searching for those objects which suit its needs. In some ways these do and in others do not coincide with those of private collectors because there is no room here for commercial considerations and because the raison d'etre of a museum is mainly that of belonging to the public and exhibiting for everyonès enjoyment the beautiful objects it preserves, inherits or purchases.
In fact, it is because the museum is public, available to all for appreciation and learning, that it is also the most apt place, almost like a public residence, to host things which it does not own, which are not its property: but whose cultural ownership remains common to all so we can enjoy them, even if only from time to time.
We have, therefore, requested and continue to ask that the rooms of private collectors or those of the most expert and qualified commercial art galleries be occasionally opened to us and to you; perhaps with a certain continuity in this way. The rooms of the museum would be links to those of private collectors of our city and of our own and even foreign countries: we would be prepared to exhibit hospitality even to works of other museums. Our rooms would in this way offer an added attraction: and perhaps it would be possible to see unusual and rare works. These would then be presented in our booklets by the respective experts and from time to time described orally to those who choose to accompany us through the rooms of our museum. Or rather, your museum.
