DESCRIZIONE:

Publisher's description:
A superb panoramic study of clothing worn in the Middle Ages. A meticulously researched text is enhanced with nearly 700 illustrations depicting all manner of apparel — from fur-trimmed cloaks and brocaded robes of courtiers and the nobility to simpler mantles, tunics and trousers worn by merchants, huntsmen, and other commoners.

From the back cover:
The pomp and pageantry, as well as the tenor of everyday life in the Middle Ages, come brilliantly to life in this superb, comprehensive study of European clothing styles. Part of a multi-volume history of fashion by noted British fashion historian Herbert Norris, this remarkable work not only describes the broad range of clothing worn by all classes of society during the medieval period, but also provides a fascinating view of medieval art and culture, history, and the lives and customs of lords and ladies as well as ordinary folk.
Brief introductory notes to each chapter provide commentary on art, architecture, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, heraldry, the feudal system, tournaments, and other aspects of medieval life before focusing on clothing worn during the reign of specific monarchs - from William I and the Norman Conquest of 1066 to the battle of Bosworth Field (1485) and the reigns of Richard III and Louis XI.
The meticulously researched text is enhanced with nearly 700 finely detailed black-and-white illustrations, as well as 16 plates in color. All manner of apparel are depicted from the fur-trimmed cloaks and robes of gold brocade favored by courtiers and members of the nobility, to the simpler garb of tunics, trousers, skirts, and gowns worn by merchants, huntsmen, entertainers, and other commoners. Hairstyles, foot-covering, jewelry, headgear, weapons, table settings, and even proper table manners, among other subjects, are also discussed in detail.
Of this book the Saturday Review said: "Fascinating in detail and particularly clearly and well arranged, [it is] a helpful and welcome means of refreshing one's memory with long forgotten dates." An invaluable reference for costume enthusiasts, fashion designers, and cultural historians, Medieval Costume and Fashion will appeal as well to anyone interested in how people lived and dressed in the Middle Ages.
