I luoghi scoscesi attirano i santi. Fu così che verso il fatidico anno Mille un pio eremita, guidato dalla folgorante apparizione di san Michele, edificò con mistico fervore, all'imbocco della Val di Susa, quello che è oggi il monumento simbolo del monachesimo feudale: un'abbazia- fortezza del ferrigno Medioevo piemontese, ritta tra terra e cielo sopra una rupe prealpina, percorsa da ripide e scenografiche scalinate.

High places attract saints. Thus it was that around the fateful year 1000 a pious hermit, guided by a dazzling apparition of Saint Michael, built what has become the very symbol of feudal monasticism at the mouth of the Val di Susa; an abbey-fortress, with all the forbidding menace of medieval Piedmont, perched provocatively between heaven and earth on a crag in the foothills of the Alps, criss-crossed by steep theatrical flights of stairs.
